Ultimate Bra Guide: Find Your Perfect Fit After Weight Loss

After losing 40 pounds, I needed a bra that fit my body and my life. This bra guide covers everything—from sizing to fabric—to help you find yours too.

Most women know the importance of a comfortable bra. Between the fabric, wire, elastic, and clasps, a lot can go wrong. As our bodies change with age, health, and weight, our bras need to change too. I’ve lost over 40 pounds since the last time I bought a bra, so I’ve created this bra guide to help you choose the best one for your needs and lifestyle.

When to Get New Bras

Our bras do an exceptional job of supporting us. Because they work so hard, when they begin to break down, it’s time to retire them. Here’s what to watch for:

  • Elasticity loss: If the bands feel loose on the tightest hook, it’s time to replace them.
  • Visible wear and tear: Be aware of fraying straps, exposed wires, or stretched-out cups.
  • Uncomfortable fit: Does it feel tight, pinch, or doesn’t sit flush against your skin?

Finding Your Bra Size

This is the most critical step in the bra guide. If you don’t have the right size, you’ll struggle to find a truly comfortable bra.

The first step is to measure your band size. Take a soft measuring tape and measure around your waist. Make sure it is snug. Round up that number to the nearest even number. This is your band size.

The next step is to measure your bust. This time, keep the measuring tape loose and measure around the most significant point. Keep the measuring tape level to ensure an accurate measurement.

Now we are going to put it all together to get our cup size. Subtract your band size from your bust measurement. Each inch is a cup size. So if the difference is 1″, it’s an A cup. If the difference is 3″, you’re a C cup, and so on.

Select What Bra Features You Need

We all have different needs from a bra. We must consider which bra features align with those needs. Questions to keep in mind:

  • Do you need everyday support or something special? Ex. t-shirt vs plunge or balconette.
  • Do you prefer underwire or wire-free?
  • What level of support do you need? Ex. High-impact sport vs bralette.
  • Do you need adjustable straps or extra hooks?

Select Fabric Type

The fabric is just as important as the shape and style. Each fabric has its own unique features:

  • Cotton: Breathable and soft, ideal for everyday comfort and sensitive skin.
  • Lace: A feminine, romantic touch. It’s not smooth under snug clothing.
  • Microfiber: Smooth and lightweight, perfect for T-shirt bras and seamless looks.
  • Sport materials: Moisture-wicking fabrics are essential for workout bras.

Bra Care Instructions

If you opt for the sustainable route, it will have a higher price tag. So do what you can to keep your bras in excellent condition for as long as possible. Here are some tips to help:

  • Rotate bras to avoid overuse; it’s recommended not to wear the same bra for two consecutive days. The material needs time off to retain its shape and elasticity.
  • Hand washing with gentle detergent is best. If it needs to be washed, place it in a delicates bag and use the delicate cycle. You want to avoid as much twisting and wringing as possible.
  • Air dry flat or hang by the center between the cups.
  • Store bras flat or in compartments to preserve shape.
