Eco-Friendly Laundry Tips to Save Money and the Planet

Your laundry routine doesn’t have to cost the earth. With a few simple swaps, you can save energy, reduce waste, and keep your clothes looking fresh.

With just a few tweaks, you can reduce your negative impact on the planet and save money. All while keeping your clothes looking their best. Here’s how to make your laundry routine more eco-friendly, one load at a time.

Wash Cold, Dry Smart

Most of your clothes don’t need to be washed in hot water. Using cold water whenever possible saves energy and is easier on the fabric. Modern detergents are designed to work well in cold water.

Air drying on a rack or clothesline is the ultimate energy saver. This also lowers shrinkage and wear. If you need to use a dryer, toss in a few dryer balls. Dyer balls help clothes dry faster by separating the items and improving airflow.

By watching with cold water and air drying, you are not just saving the planet and money. You are also extending the life of your clothing.

Eco-Friendly Detergent Options

Go to one laundry aisle and you’ll see big plastic jugs with harsh chemicals. Here are some greener options that are good for both your health and the planet.

  • Powder or Tablet Detergent: Typically comes in less packaging and is in recyclable boxes or compostable wrappers.
  • Refillable or Zero Waste Brands: Look for brands with refillable pouches, concentrated sheets, or packaging-free pods.

DIY for the Adventurous

Here are some recipes with ingredients like washing soda, baking soda, or castile soap. Try some of these formulas to see if one works for you.

Start small, like adjusting the setting on your washer for cold water. Then, when it’s time to buy more detergent, try a more sustainable brand or consider making your own. Each step you take towards eco-friendly laundry helps save our resources and keep our planet cleaner.
