7 Easy Kitchen Changes for a Sustainable Home

From beeswax wraps to DIY cleaners, small kitchen sustainable swaps can lead to big eco wins.

Small, intentional switches in your kitchen can make a big difference for both the planet and your wallet. Here are some steps to make your kitchen eco-friendly.

Switch from Disposable to Reusable

All of our paper towels, baggies, plastic wrap, and single-use containers add up. But some alternatives are more than just eco-friendly; they also add a personal touch to your kitchen. Make switches that work for your lifestyle.

  • Reusable Cloth Towels: Absorbent cloth towels are a great alternative to paper towels for cleaning up spills and drying hands. Just throw them in the washer and reuse.
  • Beeswax wrap and Silicone lids: Replace plastic wrap with beeswax wraps and silicone lids. Keep food fresh with these alternatives that are easy to clean and last for months.

Set Up a “Zero Waste” Station

Having an organized system helps sustainable habits work. Try to create designated zones in your kitchen to encourage zero-waste practices:

  • Reusable Zone: Keep reusable bags, utensils, and straws within reach
  • Food Scrap Collection: If you are composting, set up a bin for food scraps.
  • Recycling Station: Make recycling easy by clearly labeling bins for paper, plastics, glass, and metals.

Switch to Eco-Friendly Cleaners

Most commercial cleaners are harsh on the planet and indoor air quality. Try out some of these alternatives and see what works for your lifestyle.

  • DIY Cleaners: Like baking soda and vinegar, this specific combo is excellent for most kitchen messes. It works well on greasy counters. It also helps with clogged drains.
  • Castile Soap: A plant-based, biodegradable soap that works wonders on dishes, surfaces, and even produce.
  • Refillable Cleaning Systems: Brands like Blueland or Grove offer refillable, plastic-free cleaning products. You just have to add water!

Each swap you make in the kitchen reduces waste, conserves resources, and can inspire others to do the same. Start with one or two changes. Share your favorite sustainable switches below!
