Your bathroom may be tiny, but its impact isn’t. With a few mindful swaps, you can turn this high-waste space into a low-impact sanctuary.

Your bathroom is the smallest room in your home. Yet, it produces a lot of waste for its small size. But with some simple sustainable bathroom switches, you can reduce this waste and create a sustainable bathroom. 

Choose Reusable and Refillable Products

Plastic waste adds up quickly with our everyday bathroom essentials like shavers, oral care products, hair care products, etc. Ditch the disposables and single-use plastics. Try these alternatives

• Choose Bars Over Bottles: Bar soap, shampoo, and conditioners usually come in recyclable paper or cardboard. It reduces plastic waste and is also a space saver!
• Refillable Bottles: Many brands have started offering bulk refills. The refill uses as much as 70% less plastic. 
• Safety Razor or Bamboo Razor: Say goodbye to plastic razors. A metal razor is durable and provides a close shave, while bamboo razors offer a biodegradable handle. Another choice is recycled razors with a replaceable head. 
• Reusable Makeup Pads and Menstrual Products: Switch to washable cotton pads for makeup removal. Try using reusable menstrual cups or cloth pads. Gentle on your skin and the planet. 

Install a Faucet Aerator 

Water waste is a big issue in most bathrooms. Installing a faucet aerator is a simple and affordable fix. It’s renter-friendly too. 

• What is it? This small device screws onto your faucet and mixes air with water, reducing flow without lowering pressure. 
• Why Use It? It saves water and energy. You’re heating less water, and it’s easy to install and remove if you move out. 

Use Natural Materials

Plastic bathroom items don’t last long, can leach chemicals, and are the most likely to harbor bacteria and other germs.. Upgrading to natural materials like wood, which has antimicrobial properties, and metals can be both beautiful and eco-conscious. 

• Bamboo or Metal Brushes: Whether it’s toothbrushes or hairbrushes, bamboo and stainless steel are sturdy. They are biodegradable or recyclable. 
• Natural Sponges or Loofahs: Swap synthetic sponges for natural sea sponges or loofahs. These are compostable when no longer in use. 
• Glass or Metal Jars: Use glass or metal containers for cotton swabs and bath salts, etc. I even repurposed candle jars and tins for my bathroom storage.
