Fall’s crisp air calls for warmth—and nothing sets the mood like a DIY candle. Skip the chemicals, embrace the glow, and craft your own comfort.
Fall is arriving here in the Midwest, whether we like it or not. There isn’t much that beats the soft flicker and gentle aroma of a candle to make the home feel inviting. Store-bought candles may contain extra chemicals and excessive packaging. Another option to consider is DIY candles. Why not create something yourself?
Basic Supplies for DIY Candles
There are a few basic tools needed to make your own candles. Most of what is required will be used in the candles themselves.
- Natural wax, such as soy, beeswax, or coconut
- Cotton or wooden wicks
- Glass jars, teacups, or upcycled tins
- Essential oils like lavender, vanilla, cinnamon, orange or eucalyptus
- Double boiler or heat-safe bowl
- Stirring stick – you can use a wooden skewer or chopstick
- Wick holder like a pencil or clothespin
- Extras like dried flowers, herbs, or spices for decoration
Simple Step-by-Step Guide
- Prepare Your Containers: Clean and dry containers. Secure the wick at the center using a dab of melted wax or a glue dot. Rest the top of the wick on a pencil or clothespin to keep it upright.
- Melt the Wax: Using a double boiler, heat the wax gently until it is entirely melted, stirring occasionally.
- Add Scent: Let the wax cool slightly. Add 20-40 drops of desired essential oils per 1 cup of wax. Stir well.
- Pour and Set: Carefully pour your wax into the prepared container, leaving about ½ inch at the top. Let it cool and set for several hours or overnight.
- Trim and Enjoy: Cut the wick down to ¼ inch and enjoy your relaxing candle.
